Hispanic Gender And Gender Inequality - 801 Words
As mentioned, minority groups, more specifically Hispanics, face disadvantages when pursuing STEM because of their ethnic background. However, hispanic girls pursuing a STEM education or career, experience sexism and racism simultaneously. Both forms of stereotypes significantly correlate to their low representation which sets them apart from other women and men. For that reason, the few hispanic women who identify with STEM are immediately at a greater disadvantage; they are discouraged for both their gender and racial background. This problem exists for both genders who are minorities, but the continuing cycle of gender disparities, even for these two marginalized groups, tell a truth about Hispanic women looking to pursue STEM: they face both race and gender issues. For example, out of all Hispanic women that were new to college in 2006, only 2.1% intended on majoring in engineering, only 0.1% in computer science, and only 1.6% in physical sciences. On the other hand, Hispanic mal es reported a higher interest in the field of STEM: 14.5% of them expressed an intent on major in engineering, 3.1% in computer science, and 2.6% in physical sciences (Higher Education Research Institute, 2007). Although this study was conducted nearly a decade ago, the low, inadequate averages of Hispanic women continue to exist.
